Did you know that Académie Nour is a registered charity in Canada? If you are not familiar with what a charity status is and what it means for you, you won’t want to miss this post! We will discuss what charitable organizations are for, how the status is obtained, and what it means for you as a donor.

Charitable organizations play an important role in Canada by addressing various social and cultural needs. Registered charities in Canada are organizations that have received approval from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) to issue tax receipts for donations received. Any organization that wishes to obtain a charity status must meet strict criteria prior to making the application and is subject to rigorous governance and regulation. The organization must be a not-for-profit and must be registered with and recognized by the federal government. This requires rigorous, detailed and concise financial reporting with government oversight.

Tax Benefits

One of the most notable advantages of having a registered charity status in Canada is that it provides tax benefits to both the charity and its donors. Registered charities are exempt from paying income tax on their revenues and can issue official donation receipts that donors can use to claim tax credits when they submit their annual income tax reports. This can help increase the amount of donations received by the charity and help donors reduce their tax liabilities.

When you make a donation to Académie Nour, a significant portion of the amount will come back to you in the form of a tax credit. You can see in the table below examples of various donation amounts and the credits they are eligible for.

Your donation amountAvailable tax creditAfter-tax cost of your donation
$200$70$130
$500$229$271
$1,000$494$506
$2,000$1,024$976
$5,000$2,614$2,386
$10,000$5,264$4,736
$20,000$10,564$9,436

For example, if you wish to make a donation of $1,000 to Académie Nour, then your actual cost would be $506 as seen in the third column. The remaining amount will be returned to you in the form of a tax credit upon submitting your income tax returns at the end of the fiscal year. This applies to donors residing in Quebec and all other provinces in Canada.
