Academie Nour: a dream becoming reality

If you ask anyone in the world what makes Canada outstanding, there would be a general consensus that it is beautiful in its diversity. Canada is known to be a “melting pot” of people from all walks of life and from every corner of our planet. People have been immigrating to Canada for hundreds of years and continue to choose to make Canada home. Immigrants express that the reason they are so drawn to this fine country is that they find they are able to hold on to their ethnic identities and cultural roots- whether it be their language, their religion or their traditions while also embracing the beautiful Canadian traditions, values and language.

Canada embraces multiculturalism and diversity. It is tolerant of the building of churches, mosques, synagogues and temples. It welcomes and encourages third language schools where children can learn their parents’ native tongues and maintain their identities while living as Canadians contributing in this society. Naturally, parents wish to preserve not only their languages but also their religious identities and beliefs.

Académie Nour was a dream that stemmed from the desire to provide students of the Muslim-Quebec community with an institution that provides quality French-language education and enriches the personal development of our children that is also in line with Islamic values. Its goal is to shape our children to become universal citizens and proud members of Quebec and Canadian society.

The community’s needs

Académie Nour surveyed parents from the Muslim community to gain an understanding of what they look for in a private school in Quebec. The finding was that parents long for a school that prioritizes the quality of French-language education and also encourages the teaching of the native Arabic language. Parents expressed the desire to have an environment that not only welcomes but embraces and accommodates the practices and values of the Islamic religion so their children can feel comfortable practicing Islam, whether by openly performing daily prayers, wearing the hijab, or observing traditions such as Ramadan.

Our dream

The dream of having a school that provides top-notch French-language education in an environment that embraces Islamic values became a reality when members of the Muslim communities- many of them parents themselves- came together to embark on this project. Since then, a location in Montreal-North was secured for the school’s site and Académie Nour even obtained a Registered Charity number from the Canada Revenue Agency. With the school’s grand opening quickly approaching in September 2024, the vision has become clearer and the anticipation is growing. With the generous, unwavering support of our community members, we look forward to welcoming the young minds of today and creating the Canadian leaders of tomorrow.
